When the idea of a family fun day was first mooted at a Forrest MTB & Cycling club meeting, there were more than a few "naysayers". Perhaps it would be too much work, and would anyone turn up? Well all those people, including myself have been made to eat our words!
Some 25 junior riders, with ages ranging from 5 to 16 turned up, along with another 30 odd parents and senior riders for the first of our Family fun day. The day was designed to give anybody a sample of what Mountain Bike clubs do, and a look at MTB racing.
The junior race was very exciting with parents and club members lining the tight and fun course to watch the action. Juniors were split into two races with the older kids racing over a longer loop.
The day also served as the clubs first race in our summer series. A individual Time Trial was first to determine gradings for the XC race to follow.
All up a great day was had by all, with Simon Harrington proving that he will probably be the rider to chase this summer series. At still only 13 years of age, Simon is proving what many of us have secretly thought for sometime, in that he is a future elite XC mountain bike racer. Simon along with Tom Power, Hamish Middleton, Callum Middleton and Hayden Maxwell make up an awesome stable of young riders in our club. All of these guys will be out to "wave the flag" at many races around the state this summer.
A special note must be made for our two female competitors on the day. Bonnie McLaren kept the boys honest in the junior races whilst Hannah De Roest was the highest placed female in the senior races... both riders were in their first MTB race and proved that GIRLS ROCK!
