Six MTB'ers from Warrandyte (Warrandyte Cyclopaths) and two St Kilda MTb'ers ventured down to Forrest for a weekend of MTB bliss. cyclopaths

We were met by Roland on a cool and damp morning Saturday and taken for a wonderful experience. Roland took us on back roads and trails to the Yaugher trail head and Marriners run. The team thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of the Marriners circuit and really appreciated the hints on some of the more difficult sections. The mornings session was completed by riding back to Forrest via the Rail Trail.

The afternoon was spent riding 4,5 and 6 in the southern section. We enjoyed the challenge thrown out to us particularly on track 6.

Next morning was spent riding tracks 2 & 3. Red carpet was very challenging due to the amount of rain that had fallen on it. None the less the drier sections of red carpet provided exciting riding. We then proceeded to Tracks J2 and 7. This section was much drier than the southern section. We found ourselves engrossed in single track heaven! We headed back to Forrest township with the knowledge that this part of the world is truly unique. All of the trails are set in a truly magnificent bush environment. The tracks have been designed by mountain bikers for mountain bikers. The partnership between the riding community and DSE is magnificent. We will definately come back to Forrest to experience this very special MTB paradise!

We were all so impressed with the Forrest experience that we joined The Forrest MTB & Cycling Club Inc!!

Sunny skies and warm weather greeted some 20 riders at the first of our Saturday Slog.  This was also a test event for the upcoming Forrest 6 Hour to be held 5th July 2009.

All reports were that the course was awesome, and the average lap times for all riders was about 34 mins, with times ranging from 28 minutes through to approx 44 minutes.

Calum Middleton continued his domination of our events with a solid win in A-Grade, with Gavin Dunk taking out B-Grade and Neil Harrington winning C-Grade.

After 12 months of build up... endless hours and kilometers of training and numerous lead up races, the 2009 Australian 24 hour Solo Champion is our very own Jessica Douglas.

The race was held over the Easter weekend at Majura Pines in Canberra, over a fast and flowy course.  Jess' main rival was the 2008 champion and world #2 Katrin Van Der Spiegel.  Jess set a blistering pace over the first 5 hours to lead Katrin by as much as 2 mins.  During the early night the rain started to fall, and fall hard.  This suited Katrin who proceeded to build up a lead over the next 8 hours, which stretched out to as much as 9.5 minutes.  Jess then started to reel her in lap by lap and was within 4 mins of Katrin when a unscheduled "nature call" forced her to lose a massive 7 minutes, which gave Katrin a whopping 11 minute lead.

Katrin's support crew mistakenly thought that Jess had slowed down and allowed her a longer meal stop (only about 5 minutes), but what they didn't know was the "Forrest Fairy" was on the rampage to crush all before her.  Over the next 3.5 hours Jess not only passed Katrin, but proceeded to amase an 18 minute lead.  This proved too much for Katrin who essentially conceeded defeat with still almost 2 hours of racing left.  As can be common in 24 hour racing Katrin pulled off the course secure in the knowledge that 2nd place was hers, and waited till the 24 hour clock wound down.

When Jess was told she had lapped Katrin and was virtually assured the win, Jessica insisted upon doing another lap... one she will remember for a long time to come.

The win gives her Australian Champion status, and the right to wear the Aussie colors at events such as the World Championships in Canmore Alberta Canada in July this year. Part of Jessica's prizes is an enconomy air fare to Canada to compete in the Championships.

Jessica would like to thank her major sponsors Torquay Cycling Factory in co-operation with Giant Bikes, also SRAM components, Jet Black and Night Rider lights, TORQ nutrition and the Forrest community.  As a point of interest Jessica completed over 37 laps of the 9km course.  She never once sat down for a rest and had approximately 40 minutes in transition during the entire 24 hours.

The Forrest community is very proud of Jess, and I'm sure every will now wish her well in Canada for the World Titles

PhotobucketForrest MTB & Cycling club have two very exciting young juniors.  Hamish Middleton, and Simon Harrington once again showed their class by taking a one two on Sunday during the final round of the Victorian State XC series.  This time it was Simon who was the victor, with Hamish only 6 seconds behind after the gruelling two lap race.

The second place was enough to give Hamish the overall win for the Series, making him the Victorian U/15 Cross Country champion.

We really are lucky to have TWO seriously quick young guys in our club.  Mark my words, these two WILL go places, and can have a serious career if they want it.  They are already giving many of us "old hats" a spanking during club events.

Well done Hamish and Simon for your efforts.

Our final event will be the Red Carpet downhill time trial this Friday night. Meeting at the bottom of Red Carpet Trail, (follow the Lake Elizabeth signs from town) from 6.00pm onwards.

Don’t forget to bring your lights for an opportunity to do a twilight run.

Spread the word

Here are the results from Friday 27th March 2009.  Congrats to everyone, and another great race.

buster-ripOne of the wonderful things about running a web site, is that you can sometimes be a little indulgent... now is one of those times.

Any one who has ever been to Jess and Norm Douglas's house for coffee after a ride, will remember Buster.  He is the "skinny" from our famous fat and skinny duo.  Sadly after a short battle with a brain tumor, Buster passed away today in my arms.  He has had a good life, living some 16 years, and will be missed terribly by myself, Jess and Saskia, as well as many of our friends.

Seeya little mate, I hope God has a wonderful place for you, were you will be able to chase and catch all the bees you like, without any pain.  We will miss your smiling face, and wonderful nature.  Love you mate... goodnight.
