Forrest recently made the news because of a little "situation" with a Mobile phone tower.  Well seems some locals have had what appears to be a win of sorts.  This means that Forrest will soon no longer be "off the grid" and we will get Mobile Phone reception here in town.

This has become somewhat of a neccessity when it comes to safety for Mountain Bikers and bushwalkers.

Some other exciting news for Forrest, is that we will soon have a BREWERY in town!
The much anticipated opening of the Forrest Brewing Company is not too far away now.  Sharon and Matt have been a hive of activity and they assure me it won't be too long before they open their doors.

The Forrest Brewing Company & Cafe, will be a welcome addition to Forrest and give riders another reason to stay a little longer, and for some more Apres Riding entertainment.

Stay tuned for more info.

Forrest 6 hourThe second annual Forrest six hour mountain bike race has proven the popularity of the local event once again the event was sold out in record time and on Sunday the parking area was a sea of vehicles, the transition zone was a sea of people and bikes.

All the solo riders were fortunate enough to start on their bikes, whilst in an effort to cut down on congestion leading into the single track trails the teams riders had to sprint 200 metres up a hill to the start line find their bike in a sea of others and then they could start, which proved to be quite entertaining in itself

Whilst predicted there were only a few showers of rain during the day, racing on the trails was both exciting and in some places testing due to the mud.

The men’s Solo event was a hard fought race, Phil Orr winning with an amazing thirteen laps in a time of 6:14:33, second and third both on twelve laps were Nicholas Morgan, and Brad Davies, two of the local stand out riders who showed great determination finishing in fifth Stewie McKenzie and 17 year old Tom Power who was hot on his tail finishing seventh, Andrew Yarde tenth, and Ben Culton fifteenth.

Stewie McKenzie said it was a better than expected finish for him, as he had set his aim as maybe getting inside the top ten.

In the women’s solo race on twelve laps in a time of 6:00:29 the winner was Katherine O’Shea, local starlet Jess Douglas came in second and third was Peta Mullens both on eleven laps.

Katherine O’Shea commented on the course being so enjoyable to ride, it spurred her on to keep riding at a stage were she may have faltered in her bid for victory.

The overall vibe of the day and the race has cemented a place on riders calendars for next year, which will be on again at the same time in June.

It's green and gold jersey time again! This weekend sees the annual race held in majura pines Canberra Forrest local Jessica Douglas and a bunch of other Forrest mtb club members will be competing for glory. You can follow the progress via the Twitter feed on the right side of this page.

jamesIt's with tremendous sadness and shock, that we mourn the passing of James Williamson.

James, or Jimmy to some, was not only a former World 24 hour Solo champion (2008), but just a fantastic guy.  He has been to Forrest on numerous occassions, and stayed with us at our home. James was competing in the Cape Epic in Sth Africa when he passed away in his sleep.

Our heart goes out to his partner Niki, and his family.  James was a truely great champion and will be deeply missed by all.

So long mate.

Entries have now opened for the 2010 Forrest 6 Hour.

Don't delay, as the 2009 event sold out well before the cut off.  Full details here -> www.forrest6hour.com.au

Well if we thought that XC racing was just for elites, somebody forgot to tell all the other categories.

Whilst there was some very sound performances from the Elite riders, including Peter Kutschera taking our the mens elite and Jess Douglas in the womens Elite, the main action was in the so-called minor categories.

With no less that 2 major "down to the wire" sprint finishes in the U17 and U15, the Masters Men, Vets Men and Super Masters Men all provided awesome racing for us all to watch, on what many are calling one of the best XC courses they have ever raced on.

Thanks to all Forrest MTB club members who volunteered and all riders for coming down to our little town of Forrest.

Directions
From Melbourne:
Follow the signs to Geelong, use the new Geelong ring road to detour around Geelong city.  At the end of the ring road follow the signs to Colac. Approximately 8km from the end of the ring road take the "MORIAC" exit from the Colac Hwy.  Follow this road (Cape Otway Rd) all the way to Forrest.

Once you are past "BARWON DOWNS" look out for the event centre signs approximately 5km from Barwon Downs. Event centre will be on the right of the road.

Parking.
Cars will be directed by event volunteers to park along the "Powerlines". This is an open area of mostly slight uphill.  Normal 2WD cars will have no problem getting quite close to the event centre. Those with either 4WD or high clearance will be able to get closer to the event centre. Those with low clearance cars will be directed to park lower on the hill, and thus will have to walk a little further. The most anyone will need to walk will be approximately 400m.  We will be providing a "GEAR ONLY" shuttle service throughout the morning, and a drop off zone for marquees/tents.  This area has not been slashed lately, and thus why we can't park up near the event centre.

What to bring.
Marquees are welcome and you will be allocated an area to setup your Marquee.
Trollies to help carry your "gear" would be a great idea, as there is a little walk from your car. The Forrest MTB & Cycling club will be providing a small "gear" shuttle service for late comers.

  • Riding Glasses - A must at Forrest.
  • Long Sleeve tops - To protect your arms from the needle bushes, and grass trees.
  • Long Socks - Because they look cool.
  • Good Attitude - Anyone found breaking this request will be fed to the hungry Panthers.

Pre-Entries are still open, however "on the day" entries will be accept as usual. $15 MTBA Day License will apply to all non-mtba current member card holders
